Street art is becoming very popular in San Antonio over the last few years. In a city that celebrates diversity, there are quite a few spots that you can drive to see handmade masterpieces. From local street artists, to amateur Picasso’s, you’ll be blown away at the talent. The cool thing about street art is that it’s accessible, you just need to know where to look. My husband and I spent a Saturday morning looking for street art around San Antonio and were blown away at the incredible talent of some local artists.
On the corner of I-35 access road and Quincy St. We found street art on the pillars under the highway in a parking area. The artwork was created as part of the San Antonio Street Art Initiative, a non-profit that inspires street art in the city. You will see artwork from Shek Vega, Nik Soupe, Cruz Ortiz, Alex Rubio, Robert Tatum, and Andy Benavidez. There are 16 painted pillars. My favorite is the Greek god Atlas holding up the freeway. All of the murals are visually stunning.
Another part of town to check out cool street art is the N. St. Mary’s strip. We started at E. French St. and St. Mary’s. On this corner you will find a huge mural of the King of Country, George Strait by Matt Tumlinson.
Keep walking down the street and you’ll find a few murals by Los Otros, a street art duo of artist Shek Vega and Nik Soupe. I loved the bright colors of the “Let’s Fiesta.”
If you are a Spurs fan, then take a drive to the east side, close to the AT&T center. On Mel Waiters Way, you will find a mural representing the five championships, by Rah Pacasso.
There is a mural that includes “The Big 3” at the Phillips 66 gas station on E. Houston St. This mural was created by Criket, a local artist.
Art is everywhere in San Antonio; you just have to keep your eyes open to find it. San Antonio might not be a street art capital such as New York, Paris, or Brussels, but there are some cool murals all over the city. Do you have a favorite street artist or street art city? Leave a comment below.
