The Best Waffles in Brussels

Experiencing the local foods is a great way to enjoy the culture of a city. In Brussels, waffles are that culture. Nothing beats the smell of fresh waffles as you walk down cobbled streets. Truly, a lasting memory for my family will be the sweet taste every morning at breakfast. Waffles were actually a reason we chose Brussels as a must see destination. In this blog I will highlight three places that have the best waffles in Brussels.

The first stop of my waffles tour is Vitalgaufre.  Located at Rue Neuve 23-29, this place has the best Liege waffles I’ve ever had.  The Liege waffles are made with a thicker batter that is similar to bread dough, and they have uneven edges. They contain little clumps of sugar inside of them.  So if you like your waffle on the sweeter side, visit Vitalgaufre.  I bought the chocolate one, it had chocolate sticks stuffed inside of it.  When I bite into this warm waffle the chocolate melted in my mouth, so delicious.  The best part about this Liege waffle is that it’s only €2.95.

The next stop is La Gaufrerie, located at Rue de l'Etuve 53.  I picked this waffle shop because of the variety of toppings they offer.  It’s hard not to get overwhelmed when you see how many different toppings you can get on your waffle.  They have so much variety such as kiwi slices, strawberry, ice cream, banana, honey, Nutella, and many more.  At this location I bought a Brussels waffle.  The difference between a Brussels waffle and a Liege waffle is that it’s larger, and has a rectangular shape.  There are deep grid patterns and are lighter in batter, resulting in a fluffier waffle.  The Brussels waffle starts at €2.50.  The Liege waffle starts at €2.

I’ve saved the best for last.  Right across the street from my hotel we found Gaufres de Bruxelles.  I’m telling you this is hands down the best waffle I’ve ever eaten in my life. It was so good we had to stop everyday to get one.  At Gaufres, they serve Brussels style and Liege.  We preferred the Brussels style with toppings.  Every day I got the Brussels waffle with strawberry topping with a dollop of chantilly whip cream on top.  The best part about eating this waffle is that it stayed crisp on the outside, even to the last bite.  I don’t like it when you put toppings on a waffle and it gets soggy halfway through eating it.  This waffle did not disappoint.  Prices start at €2 and toppings are extra.

When I visit new cities I like to experience the food and the culture. Brussels was a foodie dream.  I feel like I ate my way through Brussels with the waffles and chocolate.  Do you love waffles as much as I do? Leave a comment below.
